POSTGRADUATE PROGRAM
Hacettepe University Faculty of Dentistry , Department of Orthodontics, offers a program which leads to a specialty training and PhD in Orthodontics. A minimum of 3 years of continuous attendance is required of candidates for the PhD degree. Students must register for a full program each semester during their residency. The program follows the ERASMUS recommendations. FEES
The academic year at Hacettepe University
Faculty of Dentistry Department of Orthodontics consists of two
semesters. All foreign students are assessed fees of $7,500 each year to the
University. Students are required to purchase their own instruments, They also
pay general fees

Application Procedures:
1-
The candidate should be a graduate of a School of Dentistry.
2-
If the participant has not graduated from a university in Turkey, An
Equivalency report should be taken from YOK (Higher Educational Council).
Applications to YOK (Higher Educational Council) must be with a university
diploma and transcript.
3-
The participant should have a study visa.
4-
The participant should have attended the LES examination.
5-
The participant should have attended TOEFL for English, or any
equivalent examinations for German or
French.

Edgewise Technique 2Preparation and features of special arch wires such as consolidation and torqueing arch wires, problems that may occur during treatment and their solutions. Begg Technique 1Development of Begg orthodontic mechanics, preparation and application of I., II. and III. stage arch wires, problems that may occur during treatment and their solutions. Removable Appliances 1Fabrication and clinical application of removable appliances, treatment of various cases by use of these appliances. Growth and Development 1Laws of human growth and development, normal growth and development in prenatal and postnatal life and abnormalities of growth and development. Growth and Development 2 (Normal and Abnormal Facial Growth)This course consists of the following: 1- The growth sites in the craniofacial skeleton and postnatal growth changes including soft tissues. 2- Variation in the function of components within the craniofacial region relevant to facial growth. 3- Individual variation in facial configuration. 4- The influence of environmental factors on facial growth. Cephalometrics 1This course involves the following: 1- Identifying relevant anatomical structures on cephalograms. 2- Describing the morphology of the head basis of cephalograms. 3- Making tracings of cephalograms in norma lateralis and frontalis that include essential contours 4- Performing several cephalometric diagnostic analysis on tracings. Use of Computer in OrthodonticsIntroduction of PC/AT computer, teaching of DOS managing system, how to use computer programs developed for practical use. Edgewise Technique 3Use of headgear in edgewise technique, causes of anchorage loss, treatment Class I, Class II and Class III malocclusions with edgewise technique, clinical applications. Begg Technique 2Treatment of Class I, Class II and Class III malocclusions with Begg technique and clinical applications. Removable Appliances 2The aim of this course is teaching philosophy and clinical application of removable and functional appliances. MalocclusionsTreatment planning and treatment in mixed and permanent dentition, evaluation of treatment results. Multidisciplinary Treatment 1 (Cleft + Orthognatic / Craniofacial Surgery)This course consists of the indication and application of combined orthodontic surgical treatment and specific aspects of orthodontic treatment in patients requiring orthognatic surgery. Also multidisciplinary approaches in the treatment of cleft palate patients will be discussed. Orthodontic Problem SeminarsPreparation and discussion of seminars on various orthodontic subjects. Embryology of the the HeadThe aim of this course is to give an insight in embriology of cranial structures for understanding of normal growth and development of face, jaws and teeth, teratogenesis and development of clefts and other facial congenital malformations. Normal and Abnormal Development of DentititonThe aim of this course is as follows; 1- The development of normal occlusion from birth to adulthood and variations in this development 2- Abnormalities in number, size, form and position of teeth. 3- Genetic and environmental factors relevant to the development of the dentition 4- Developmental patterns of different malocclusions. 5- Effect of agenesis and supernumerary teeth and as well as (premature) loss or extraction of deciduous and permanent teeth on the development of the dentition. Aspects of Tooth Movements and Dentofacial OrthopedicsThis course consists of the following: 1- Process of tooth eruption and spontaneous tooth movement. 2- The effect of different types of force application on cells and tissues. 3- The influence of force systems and force magnitude. 4- Posttreatment changes . 5- The cellular aspect of endochondral growth in the nasal septum condyles and ephiphyses and bone growth at sutures and bone surfaces. 6- The effect of dentofacial orthopedic measures on tissue systems and relationship between adaptibility of tissues and results of dentofacial orthopedic measures. Orthodontic MaterialThe course consists of selection of correct material for various orthodontic procedures, proper handling and application of orthodontic materials. Orthodontic BiomechanicsThe aim of this course is as follows: 1- To understand basic principles of statics and mechanics of materials. 2- To relate principles of mechanics to clinical and research problems 3- To solve problems related to force resultants and force equivalents and to estimate forces produced by different orthodontic appliances and dentofacial orthopedic devices. Aethiology in OrthodonticsThis course consists of genetic and environmental factor that influence postnatal development of the dentition and facial growth. Also obtaining a relevant patient history and performing a thorough clinical examination will be taught. Long Term Effects and Iatrogenic Effects of Orthodontic TreatmentThe aim of this course is to study the relapse associated with different anomalies and treatment procedures and to study the changes during retention and postretention period. Also This course consists of the following: 1- The risk involved in different treatment and retention procedures. 2- The influence of various conditions and age ranges on iatrogenic effects. 3- The possible influence of treatment on Temporomandibular Joint and the effect of different types of treatment on periodontal tissues in the long run. 4- Factors involved in root resorption 5- The possible influence of treatment on facial expressivity, facial appearence and aesthetics. Orthodontic LiteratureThe aim of this course is to deduct essentials in current literature and to present concise and analitic literature reviews. Extra Oral AppliancesThe aim of this course is to teach indication, design, potential and the use of various types headgears, facial masks, chincaps and combined extra oral - functional appliances. Partial Fixed AppliancesThe aim of this course is to give the knowledge of indicationand application of partial fixed appliances and potential and limitation of this kind of therapy. Fixed Appliances and Retention AppliancesThe aim of this course is to teach the indication and application of fixed appliances, different concepts and treatment approaches in design and biomechanical principles of fixed appliances and their potential and limitations. Also indication, contraindication, design of retention appliances and potential and limitation of their use. Teaching the most appropriate duration of retention. Multidisciplinary Treatments 2The aim of this course is to teach indication, contraindication and specific aspects of orthodontic treatment in periodontally compromise dentitions and to contribute orthodontic treatment to periodontal condition of patients. Also to teach indication, application and specific aspects of orthodontic restorative treatment. Specific Treatment Procedures 1The indication and contraindication o interceptive measures are taught in this course. Special Treatment Procedures 2The aim of this course is to teach the indication and specific aspects of orthodontic treatment of adults in collaboration with the general dental practicioners. Craniofacial Dysfunction; 1- The aetiology and various therapeutic procedures of craniomandibular dysfunction and general measures to improve craniomandibular dysfunction Management of Oral Health SafetyThe aim of this course is to teach the procedures to deduct a high risk of developing dental caries and periodontal problems in patients. Also this course consists of prevention of cross infection, methods of sterilization of instruments, management of high risk patterns and the control of substances hazardous to health for patients and dental staff. Office Management and ErgonomyThis course consists of design, equipment and instruments needed in an orthodontic practice. Besides recruitment, selection training and quality control of auxillary staff is taught. Also financing and administration of an orthodontic practice and public relationships are described. Also this course teaches the optimal position of the patient, orthodontist, chairside assistant and placement of instruments to conduct specific clinical tasks and the most efficient sequence to perform specific clinical procedures. Orthodontic Legislation and Proffesional EthicsThe aim of this course is to teach the rules and laws that apply to an orthodontic practice, responsibilities and services vulnerable to malpractice law suits, different insurance coverages required and the procedures to follow when a law suit arises. Also this court teaches the behaviour and conduct expected of an orthodontist as a health care provider and ethical standards that apply to relationships with staff, patients and colleagues. Cephalometric PredictionThis course involves potential and limitations of different methods of longitudinal cephalometric assessment and limitaiton of analysis and growth also validity and limitation of growth prediction including computerized prediction Syndromes of the HeadDuring this course, students will be familiar with the syndromes in relation to aetiology, prognosis and relation to orthodontic and orthognatic surgery.
